What is the Flying Blue programme?
Flying Blue is the joint loyalty programme of KLM and Air France, making it one of the largest frequent flyer programmes in Europe. As a member you earn miles on flights with KLM, Air France and more than 30 partner airlines, as well as through credit card spending, hotel stays, car rental and the Flying Blue shopping portal.
Flying Blue has four status tiers: Explorer (entry level, open to everyone), Silver (from 2,500 XP per year), Gold (from 5,000 XP) and Platinum (from 10,000 XP). Higher tiers unlock complimentary lounge access, extra baggage allowance, priority boarding and bonus miles on flights. XP (Experience Points) can only be earned by flying; credit card spending earns award miles only.
Miles earned through a credit card are award miles: redeemable for free flights, upgrades or items in the Flying Blue store. You cannot use award miles to build status, but they are ideal for saving towards a dream trip. The value of a Flying Blue mile depends on how you redeem it: from approximately 0.8 cents per mile for merchandise to 2 cents or more for business class redemptions on popular routes.
Joining Flying Blue is free via the KLM or Air France website. When you apply for a Flying Blue credit card your account is automatically linked or created. Miles you earn appear in the Flying Blue app or website immediately.
Which credit cards give KLM miles?
In the Netherlands there are three American Express cards that let you earn KLM Flying Blue miles directly or indirectly. Here is a comparison of all three options:
| Card | Miles per €1 | Annual fee | Miles type |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMEX Flying Blue Gold | 1.2 miles | €198/yr | Direct Flying Blue |
| AMEX Flying Blue Platinum | 1.5 miles | €498/yr | Direct Flying Blue |
| AMEX Gold Card | 1 point → 1 mile | €240/yr | Via Membership Rewards |
The AMEX Flying Blue Gold Card is the entry-level option for KLM miles earners. For €198 per year you earn 1.2 miles per euro spent, which at €1,000 per month amounts to 14,400 miles per year. The card also includes a welcome bonus, extra miles on KLM flights and access to Flying Blue benefits.
The AMEX Flying Blue Platinum Card offers the highest miles rate: 1.5 miles per euro. At €1,500 per month that is 27,000 miles per year. The higher annual fee of €498 pays for itself at high usage levels. It also includes complimentary lounge visits, a higher welcome bonus and bonus miles on KLM and Air France flights.
The AMEX Gold Card earns Membership Rewards points that transfer 1-for-1 to Flying Blue miles. This is ideal if you want flexibility: you can also redirect points to British Airways Executive Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer or other partners. The Gold Card costs €240 per year and earns 1 point (= 1 mile) per euro.
How to earn miles fastest
The smartest way to accumulate miles quickly is to use your credit card for all everyday spending: groceries, petrol, insurance premiums, subscriptions and online shopping. Put all your regular bills on the card and pay everything you would normally put on your debit card. Settle the full balance monthly so no interest applies.
Flying Blue has an extensive shopping portal where you earn extra miles at hundreds of online retailers. Through partners such as Booking.com and many others you earn additional miles on top of your credit card miles. Combine this with your Flying Blue card for double miles on those purchases.
Watch for double miles promotions: Flying Blue regularly runs campaigns where you temporarily earn double or triple miles on specific partner purchases or flights. Sign up for the Flying Blue newsletter so you never miss a promotion. Timing a large purchase to coincide with a bonus period maximises your return.
Do not overlook KLM flights themselves: as a Flying Blue member you earn additional award miles on every flight alongside your status miles. Always book via the KLM website or app and ensure your Flying Blue number is entered. For business travel, using your card for company expenses where permitted can build large balances quickly.
Redeeming miles: how to get maximum value
The value of a Flying Blue mile varies significantly. Redeeming for merchandise or gift cards typically yields around 0.8 cents per mile. Economy class flights come in at approximately 1 cent per mile. The best value comes from Business and First class redemptions: here value can reach 2 cents per mile or more, because cash fares are high but miles prices are relatively low.
Use the Flying Blue Award Planner on the KLM website to find available award seats. Book as early as possible: award inventory is limited and the best seats disappear quickly. Flexibility on travel dates helps enormously — weekday travel and off-peak seasons cost significantly fewer miles.
Flying Blue also offers partner awards: you can redeem miles for flights on more than 30 SkyTeam partner airlines including Delta, Korean Air and Aeromexico. This greatly expands your options, particularly for destinations outside Europe that KLM does not serve directly.
Pay attention to seasonal pricing: Flying Blue applies different miles rates for low and high season. The same ticket costs considerably fewer miles in the low season (autumn, early spring). Plan your dream flight outside school holidays and public holidays for the best miles rates. Use the calendar view in the Award Planner to identify cheap travel dates.
