What is the American Express Flying Blue Gold Card?
The American Express Flying Blue Gold Card is a charge card designed specifically for KLM travellers. Unlike a conventional credit card, the full balance must be settled every month — there is no fixed spending limit, but interest is not possible. This makes the card financially transparent: you earn miles without accumulating debt.
The card is a collaboration between American Express and the Flying Blue loyalty programme of KLM and Air France. Flying Blue is one of the largest frequent flyer programmes in Europe, with partners across dozens of airlines, hotels and other service providers. The Flying Blue Gold Card has long been the most popular miles credit card for Dutch frequent flyers.
You earn 1 mile per €1 on all purchases, and 1.5 miles per €1 on direct purchases with KLM and Air France — such as flight tickets, baggage options and upgrades. This higher earning rate makes the card particularly attractive for those who fly regularly with KLM.
American Express manages the card and provides its renowned customer service: available 24/7, in English and Dutch, with a strong reputation for resolving issues efficiently. The card runs on the AMEX network, accepted at approximately 85% of all locations in the Netherlands and virtually all international retailers worldwide.
Costs and benefits
The annual fee is €198 per year. This is a meaningful investment, but active KLM travellers recoup this quickly through miles. The welcome bonus of 5,000 miles is awarded on your first purchase — an immediate value boost that already makes a significant contribution towards your first free flight.
A unique benefit is the ability to pay for KLM flight tickets in 3 interest-free monthly instalments. This is an exceptional feature: as a charge card the Flying Blue Gold Card normally does not extend credit, but a special instalment arrangement applies for KLM tickets. This allows you to spread the cost of a more expensive flight without any additional charges.
You automatically receive 30 XP (Experience Points) per year credited to your Flying Blue account. XP are the points with which you build Flying Blue status: Silver, Gold or Platinum. Each status level gives you additional benefits with KLM — from extra baggage allowance to lounge access and upgrades. The 30 XP per year from the card is a valuable supplement to the XP you earn from flights.
Because it is a charge card, you pay no interest. The balance is automatically debited from your bank account each month. Outside the euro zone a foreign exchange margin of 2% applies. The minimum income requirement for application is €30,000 gross per year. A BKR credit check is performed.
Flying Blue miles with the Gold Card: how it works
Earning miles happens fully automatically. Every purchase you make with the Flying Blue Gold Card is automatically converted into miles credited directly to your Flying Blue account. You do not need to submit receipts or activate promotions — the card works for you.
Via the Flying Blue app and website you always have a clear overview of your miles balance and XP status. You can also earn additional miles through the Flying Blue Shopping Portal, where selected online retailers award bonus miles on top of your card miles. This effectively doubles your earning potential with participating partners.
The value per mile varies depending on how you redeem them. For short European flights the value is approximately 0.8 cents per mile; for intercontinental Business Class flights it can rise to 1.5 cents or more. Experts generally estimate around 1 cent per mile as a realistic average for Flying Blue miles.
Miles can be redeemed for flights with KLM, Air France and all SkyTeam partners (including Delta, Air Europa, China Southern and more than 15 other airlines). You can also use miles for upgrades, hotel stays and services with Flying Blue partners. Miles do not expire as long as you have at least one qualifying activity on your account within 24 months.
Who is the Flying Blue Gold Card best for?
The Flying Blue Gold Card is the ideal choice for KLM frequent flyers who want to earn miles at every moment of the day — not just during flights, but at every supermarket visit, petrol station stop or restaurant meal. At €1,500 per month in spending you accumulate 18,000 miles per year, enough for a free return flight to a European destination.
The card is also interesting for those who want to build Flying Blue status quickly. The combination of 30 XP per year from the card plus XP from your flights accelerates your path to Silver or Gold status. Status brings substantial benefits with KLM — extra baggage, priority lanes, and for Gold even lounge access at Schiphol.
Considering the Flying Blue Platinum Card? That offers 1.5 miles per €1 on all purchases (not just KLM/AF), more XP per year and additional privileges. The annual fee is approximately €498. For most users the Gold Card delivers the best cost-to-miles ratio. Above around €3,000 per month in spending the Platinum Card becomes progressively more attractive.
The card is less suited for those who do not fly regularly with KLM or Air France, or who prefer flexible Membership Rewards points (choose the AMEX Gold Card instead). For those who pay predominantly outside the euro zone the 2% foreign exchange surcharge is a factor to consider.
