How do we choose the best credit card?
SmartCreditcard.eu currently compares 54 credit cards based on more than 20 criteria: annual fee, monthly costs, currency conversion fee, BKR registration, income requirement, travel insurance, purchase insurance, lounge access, loyalty programme, acceptance network (Visa/Mastercard/AMEX), customer service and user experience.
We apply a transparent methodology: each card is assessed on its own merits in the category for which it was designed. A free prepaid card is not compared on the same criteria as a premium travel card. We use a weighted scoring model per category.
Our assessments are fully independent. We may receive compensation if you apply for a card through our site, but this has no influence on our rankings and scores. A card with poor features receives a low score — regardless of commercial relationships.

ANWB Visa Gold Card
ANWB Visa Gold is the best card for car rental. For just €52/yr you get excess coverage up to €1,500, 365-day purchase insurance and 24/7 ANWB roadside assistance. You save €105-210 per week's holiday by declining the CDW from the rental company. Paid back in one holiday.
N26 Smart Mastercard
N26 Smart is the best card without a BKR (Dutch credit registry) check. 0% currency conversion fee, complete bank account, sub-accounts for budgeting and quick setup via the app. For people with a negative BKR registration who still want a fully-featured payment card.
How do you choose the best credit card?
The best credit card does not exist in absolute terms — it only exists in relation to your personal situation. A demanding business traveller who flies 20 times a year has very different needs than a student who primarily wants to shop online and wants a card for their first trip abroad.
Step 1: Determine your primary goal
What do you primarily want from your credit card? Daily use and online payments? Then a free card like Revolut or Bunq is sufficient. Do you want travel benefits? Then look at N26 You, Flying Blue AMEX or AMEX Platinum. Business use and accounting? Then Knab Zakelijk or AMEX Business Gold is the best choice. Car rental with excess coverage? Then ANWB Visa Gold is unbeatable.
Step 2: Check the requirements
Do you have a BKR registration? Then traditional bank credit cards are not available and you must choose Revolut, Bunq, N26 Smart or N26 You. Do you have no fixed income? Then prepaid cards without an income requirement are the only option. Are you a freelancer active for less than a year? Then AMEX Business Gold may not yet be available and Moss Mastercard is the best starter.
Step 3: Calculate costs versus benefits
A card with an annual fee is only worthwhile if the benefits are worth more than the costs. ANWB Visa Gold costs €52/yr but saves €150-210 on one car rental holiday per year. AMEX Gold costs €240/yr but offers €100 free dining, 4x lounge (€120 value) and points. AMEX Platinum costs €780/yr but offers Privium Plus (€350), lounges (€500+) and travel insurance (€200+) together already more than €1,000 in benefits for the frequent traveller.
